Fresno Pacific snaps Point Loma Nazarene 17 game win streak
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The Point Loma Nazarene University Baseball team had been on the longest winning streak in school history entering Friday. The Sea Lions (30-9) were looking to notch wins number 18 and 19 in a row when they faced fellow PacWest League rival and NCAA Division 2 opponent, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, in a double header. PLNU was attempting to keep their momentum going after beating San Diego Christian College nine days before, 9-0.Things started out looking promising for the Sea Lions. In the third inning, AJ Derr would send Tyler Baker across home plate with an RBI triple. Then a little while after, it was Ryan Garcia getting in on the RBI action. He would bring Derr across home plate with an RBI single up the middle.
But that would prove to be the last call for the Sea Lions as the Sunbirds would rattle off five more runs in over two innings. Baron Bower led the way for the Fresno Pacific, going 2-5 with 3 RBI’s. The Sea Lion’s Eric Pierce (7-3) was saddled with the loss, while Wilson Ashford (7-2) collected the win, giving up just two runs in six innings of work.
Tanner Irwin was credited with the save, pitching three scoreless innings while giving up just two hits.
