Gas leak forces evacuations in Little Italy

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A natural gas leak forced evacuations in Little Italy Wednesday.

The non-injury mishap occurred shortly after 11 a.m., when a construction crew accidentally ruptured an underground line while digging at the intersection of India and West Date streets, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Emergency personnel cleared everyone out of businesses and restaurants along half-block stretches of both roads while utility crews worked to fix the problem, SDFRD Capt. Joe Amador said.

The evacuations remained in effect in the mid-afternoon, the captain said.
