Husband shoots wife in head in Gaslamp quarter

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – An 83-year-old man shot and gravely wounded his 57-year-old wife Saturday during an argument they were having in the Gaslamp district, police said.

The shooting occurred on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Broadway around 2:15 p.m., said San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert.

The man and his wife were walking on the sidewalk southbound on Fifth Avenue when they began to argue, Herbert said, adding that he suddenly pulled out a gun and shot her a number of times.

After firing the shots, the suspect dropped the gun and was detained by witnesses who held him for officers, he said.

Paramedics rushed the woman to a nearby hospital, where she was cling to life, said Officer David Stafford.

The gunman and his victim have both been identified, but their names are being withheld pending family notification, Herbert said.
