Giant sinkhole near UCSD
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A large sinkhole opened on a University City street
Thursday, leaving dozens of nearby businesses without water service and forcing
the closure of the roadway through the late morning and afternoon.
A passer-by discovered the water-filled chasm in the middle of Campus
Point Drive, near Campus Point Court, shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to
San Diego police.
A stretch of the street was blocked off in the area, which is just north
of UC San Diego campus, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.
City crews eventually determined a storm-water pipe had ruptured below
the street and leaked runoff flows that eroded the ground beneath the pavement.
The sinkhole eventually grew to about 50 feet in length and 25 feet in width.
The San Diego Water Department shut off the main that serves the
neighborhood as a precaution, leaving 30 or so commercial properties without
functional plumbing through the day, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins said.
By early evening, there was no estimate of when the pipeline and roadway
would be repaired and back in service.
