Good Morning San Diego live from Del Mar Opening Day 2019

DEL MAR (KUSI) – A KUSI News annual tradition, we are broadcasting live from the paddock at the Del Mar Racetrack to celebrate one of the most fun days in San Diego County.

Joe Harper, CEO of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, sat down with KUSI’s Lauren Phinney and Paul Rudy to detail all the improvements that have been made to the Del Mar Racetrack and all the fun activities that they have prepared to celebrate the 80th horse racing season at Del Mar! The are expecting more than 40,000 race fans to attend Opening Day.

KUSI’s Allie Wagner spent the morning on the other side of the racetrack, in the stables. In the 6:00 AM hour, she spoke to Matt Chew, a horse trainer, about what it takes to prepare for a successful racing season.

Every year, people always tell us they want to hear from the jockeys themselves. Veteran jockey Aaron Gryder joined us on the set to tell us about his amazing career as a jockey and how he has completed more than 4,000 races.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a horse analyst? KUSI’s Elizabeth Alvarez got all the insider information from Michelle Yu as the track was being groomed for Opening Day morning warm ups.

Craig Dado, Executive Vice President & CMO of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club told us all about the schedule for Opening Day and other important information for the rest of the season.

But, one of the most important questions people have ahead of Opening Day at Del Mar is, what hat should I wear? Christine Moore is the owner of Christine A. Moore Millinery has had many of her hats featured on famous magazines and showed us all the different styles people will be wearing at the track.

Plus, anyone is able to sign up for the annual Opening Day hat contest!

A fun day on Good Morning San Diego wouldn’t be complete without a visit from our favorite local comedian, Russ T. Nailz! He is performing tonight at 067 in Rancho Santa Fe! Russ T. Nailz told us his favorite part about Opening Day at Del Mar is that “even ugly people are pretty today.”

Our next guest is preparing more than your average person for Opening Day. Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza is looking to win some races this year. He told us all about what he and other jockeys do to prepare for a full racing season.

And one of the most exciting segments from Opening Day at Del Mar every year, visiting the Money Room. KUSI’s Lauren Phinney got a tour from DMTC CFO Mike Ernst as he explained how they track operates the money room for racing season.

Last but not least, Les Kepic, the trumpeter for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club helped us close out our special edition of Good Morning San Diego with some well known tunes.
