Gunfire believed to have sparked wildland fire east of Otay Mesa

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A 20-acre wildland fire east of Otay Ranch was 100 percent contained Sunday, and investigators believe some sort of gunfire sparked the blaze.

The Border Fire burned for a short time Saturday east of Otay Mesa, about two miles north of the border and about a mile southeast of Donovan State Prison and the George Bailey Detention Facility, near Keubler Ranch Road and Otay Mountain Truck Trail, Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser said.

The fire was reported 100 percent contained at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, Bortisser said. Investigators believe that a discharged firearm sparked the blaze.

The fire began about 4:20 p.m. Saturday and was first reported as a 100-acre fire burning with a slow rate of spread about 5 p.m. Cal Fire enacted a full wildland response that included air and ground resources and determined the blaze to be only 20 acres, Bortisser said.

The blaze was not a threat to structures and about 5:40 p.m. Saturday, crews had stopped the fire’s forward rate of spread.
