Heart attack causes fatal accident in La Jolla

LA JOLLA (KUSI) – A woman who apparently was distracted when her passenger suffered a fatal heart attack ran her car off Torrey Pines Road Friday striking a curb and signal box which led to traffic being snarled for a couple of hours, police said.

It happened about 1:39 p.m., San Diego Sgt. Ray Battrick said. "A 2008 Lexus sedan was westbound on Torrey Pines Road just east of Hidden Valley Road when the 81-year-old driver crossed the median and drove across the opposite lanes and hit a curb and signal box,” Battrick said. "The driver was not injured, but her 77-year-old female passenger suffered a cardiac arrest.”

The unidentified passenger was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
