Helen Woodward Animal Center hosts ‘Remember Me Thursday’

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — A free public event took place Thursday evening at Balboa Park in honor of Helen Woodward Animal Center’s "Remember Me Thursday."

"Remember Me Thursday" shines a light on the millions of animals who lost their lives simply because they never found a forever home. It also reminds all of us of the dogs and cats that are currently in cages, waiting to be adopted.

The president of Helen Woodward Animal Center deeply wanted to get the world talking about pet adoption. He started, "Remember Me Thursday" four years ago.

In that short amount of time, more than 164 countries have showed support and participated in the lighting ceremony.

The #RememberMeThursday hashtag has also been shared over 500 million times on social media.

Big time celebrities serve as luminaries and schools are now teaching students about the event and the importance of animal adoption.

It just goes to show that one little idea really can make a difference and help change the world.
