High school student dies of meningitis

SAN DIEGO (AP) – San Diego County public health officials say a high school student has died from a suspected bacterial meningitis infection.

The 14-year-old freshman at Patrick Henry High School in the San Carlos area was identified by her mother as Jewelean Pimentel.

Monica Pimentel said her daughter complained of a headache Tuesday, was hospitalized Wednesday, and died Thursday.

Dr. Eric McDonald told the U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/1eBESU9 ) that people who were in close contact with the youth were given antibiotics.

It's the first suspected meningitis death reported in San Diego County this year. Last year, the county saw 16 reported cases and three deaths.

Bacterial meningitis can cause swelling of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, and can be fatal.
