High surf coming to local beaches this week

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Several days of high surf and strong rip currents are in store for San Diego County beaches beginning Monday night, meteorologists said.

“A long period, south-southwest swell will reach the coast tonight and build Tuesday through Thursday,” according to the National Weather Service. “This will generate above normal surf up to 7 feet on southwest facing beaches.”

The agency also warned that very strong and dangerous rip currents were likely to accompany the high surf, which is expected to subside Thursday night into Friday.

A beach hazards statement will be in effect from 11 tonight to 9 p.m. Thursday. In issuing the statement, the NWS said beach-goers should obey posted warning signs and flags, and speak with lifeguards before going into the water.

“Use caution when in or near the water and always swim near a lifeguard,” the NWS urged in an advisory.
