High surf expected through Sunday evening

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A large northwest swell was expected to bring high surf and strong rip currents to the beaches south of La Jolla on Sunday, the National Weather Service said Saturday.

Waves were expected to reach up to six feet with local eight foot sets, with the largest sets likely in the morning. The strongest rip currents are expected in the late afternoon, according to the NWS.

The conditions were expected to last from Sunday morning to Sunday evening.

Forecasters said the rip currents could result in dangerous swimming conditions, especially for those with little experience in the water. Beach goers were advised to obey posted warning signs, use caution in and around the water and to swim near a lifeguard.
