Hillcrest Farmers Market holds first craft beer sampling in San Diego County
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – California passed a bill approving craft beer samples and sales at farmers markets in January, and now the Hillcrest Farmers Market is the first and only market to be approved for craft beer sampling in San Diego County. Local craft beer establishments will serve samples at the farmers market every Sunday on a rotating schedule, highlighting the booming industry.
Hillcrest Brewing Company was the first to be featured, debuting the new addition Mar. 13.
San Diego County is home to more than 100 craft breweries, with the special brews becoming a tourist attraction and staple of the area. Adding a chance to sample beers from around the county is a decision to enhance the experience for locals, promote local business, and build toward improving and expanding farmers markets.
"I think it’s a great idea," San Diego local Shaun Travers said after receiving a sample from Hillcrest Brewing Company. "I think most of the people that are frequenting farmers markets are folks that are going to be interested in the craft beer industry, and in San Diego the craft beer industry is really, really the hub."
"I’d love to see more folks out here," Travers added. "The smaller ones, the guys that are just starting out, having their wares out here and me being able to try it, it’s going to make me buy their beer."
Hillcrest Farmers Market hasn’t released a schedule on which breweries they’ll be featuring, but with such a wide selection to choose from ranging from big name brands like Stone Brewing to any number of smaller-scale operations, Sundays should bring a huge variety of beers to go with the fresh food and festivities.
