North County hit-and-run leaves motorist severely injured

VALLEY CENTER (CNS) – A hit-and-run crash on a rural North County road left an 87-year-old motorist severely injured today, authorities said.

The head-on collision happened shortly after 11 a.m., when a northbound 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo drifted into a southbound lane and smashed into an oncoming 2009 BMW 328i on Valley Center Road, near Lake Wohlford Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

As medics were tending to the badly hurt driver of the BMW, the unidentified woman who had been behind the wheel of the Chevrolet walked off, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

She was gone from the area by the time CHP personnel arrived, he said.

The injured man — who lives in the Palomar Mountain area — was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido in critical condition.

Authorities had no detailed description of the fugitive motorist, and it was unclear if she also was injured.
