Hit and run motorist still at large

EL CAJON (CNS) – Police sought today to identify and locate a motorist who crashed a car into an East County business at high speed and then ran off, leaving behind a severely injured passenger.

The eastbound Nissan Maxima veered off East Main Street in El Cajon shortly after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, crossing a center median near Claydelle Avenue and narrowly missing several large trees before ramming into the commercial building, city spokeswoman Monica Zech said.

Emergency crews arrived to find the driver gone and a badly hurt man in the mangled sedan. Medics took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment of serious but apparently non-life-threatening head trauma and other injuries, Zech said.

The person who had been driving the car remained at large this afternoon, and investigators were looking for witnesses who might be able to help identify him or her.
