Home fire in Carlsbad leaves one dead

CARLSBAD (CNS) – Firefighters extinguishing several suspicious blazes in a home near La Costa Country Club Monday found the body of a woman in a bed, authorities reported.

A neighbor reported seeing smoke coming out of the house in the 2900 block of Gaviota Circle in Carlsbad shortly before 7 a.m., according to police.

While dousing the flames, a firefighter found the dead woman, who appeared to have been in her 50s, Lt. Marc Reno said. Her cause of death was not immediately apparent.

Sheriff’s arson detectives were called in to determine what caused the fires, the lieutenant said. The county Medical Examiner’s Office was summoned to take custody of the body.
