‘Hot prowl’ burglar to be sentenced

EL CAJON (CNS) – A transient who broke into a sleeping woman’s residence in Lakeside and knelt next to her bed before fleeing was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday.

Shawn Richard Barton, 24, pleaded guilty to a “hot prowl” residential burglary charge on Dec. 16. In exchange, he faces up to six years in prison.

Barton was arrested June 3, four days after the 2:50 a.m. break-in at the home on Providence Bay Court.

“The terrified homeowner yelled at the intruder, who then stood up and made some type of `growling’ noise as he fled the residence,” San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. George Calderon said in June.

Barton was initially arrested shortly after the burglary on suspicion of being drunk in public. Four days later, he was taken into custody in the 9700 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard.
