15 hurt, 120 displaced by San Jose apartment fire

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a fire at a San Jose apartment complex has injured at least 15 people and displaced about 120.

Officials say the blaze erupted shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday and gutted or damaged 36 units at the Summerwind Apartments.

Fire officials say about 20 residents whose front doors were blocked by flames and smoke were rescued from balconies, where they’d planned to climb down ropes and sheets.

Some residents escaped with nothing on their backs but pajamas. Esteban Garcia told KGO-TV that he lost everything in the blaze, including all his clothes.

Four people were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and 11 others were examined at the scene.

The fire erupted in a second-floor unit. The cause is under investigation.
