2 California brothers killed in Ethiopian Airlines jet crash

REDDING, Calif. (AP) — Two California brothers traveling the world together are among those killed in an Ethiopian Airlines jet crash.

Melvin and Bennett Riffel, of Redding, were on vacation and had been in Australia and Somalia before traveling to Ethiopia.

Cousin Joel Grogan says in a GoFundMe page asking for support for Melvin’s wife, Brittney, that they were expecting their first child this May.

Family friend Jake Mangas tells the Record Searchlight that Brittney also was vacationing with the brothers, but she had returned to California after they all visited Australia.

The brothers grew up in Redding and graduated from Shasta High School. They were the only children of Susan and Ike Riffel.

Friend Jordan Webb says the brothers had polar opposite personalities but in recent years had become close.
