5 held for allegedly trying to force tenants from apartment

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Five people have been arrested after authorities say a landlord tried to evict tenants from a Silicon Valley apartment by having friends smash open the door and force them out.

Authorities say Reenu Saini of Sunnyvale wanted to eject a family that was behind in the rent from a unit in her rent-controlled building in Mountain View.

Authorities say on Monday night, she and four acquaintances demanded the couple and their two children leave.

When they refused, police say the group shut off power, tried to break open the door and then tried to force it with a knife.

Police responding to a burglary report arrested the five on suspicion of conspiracy, attempted robbery and burglary.

It’s unclear whether they have attorneys.
