Abortion ban opponents conflicted in Louisiana governor race

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s John Bel Edwards is the only Democratic governor in the Deep South. He’s also a rare Democrat committed to taking stands against abortion.

That has outraged abortion rights advocates, whose angry calls flooded his office before he signed a ban on abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

Edwards is now hoping the head of that moment has passed, and won’t cost him key votes from the Democratic base as he tries to win reelection on Saturday.

His two main Republican challengers also oppose abortion, leaving women’s rights advocates without a major candidate in the Louisiana governor’s race.

And the Democratic Governors Association has embraced Edwards’ reelection campaign, calling it a top priority even though his anti-abortion stances are fundamentally at odds with the party’s platform.
