AEG proposes expansion of Los Angeles Convention Center

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The operator of the Los Angeles Convention Center is proposing a $1.2 billion expansion that would involve a public-private partnership and add hundreds of downtown hotel rooms.

Entertainment giant Anschutz Entertainment Group sent LA officials a letter Monday outlining the proposal, which would require city tax incentives.

The Los Angeles Times reports the plan already has preliminary support from Mayor Eric Garcetti and Councilman Curren Price, whose district includes the convention center.

The expansion would add as much as 350,000 square feet (32,500 square meters) to the downtown complex, giving it more than 1.2 million square feet (111,400 square meters) of total space.

The newspaper says the proposal separately calls for adding 850 guest rooms to the nearby JW Marriott hotel.

The convention center was last expanded in 1997.
