Anita Hill: Kavanaugh hearing isn’t a referendum on #MeToo

Anita Hill says she ‘can’t imagine’ the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Brett Kavanaugh will be fair to his accuser. But she says the much-anticipated hearing shouldn’t be seen as a referendum on the #MeToo movement.

Hill has been back in the spotlight since Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when the two were in high school. Hill’s 1991 testimony against Clarence Thomas riveted the nation. Thomas was confirmed anyway, but the hearing ushered in a new awareness of sexual harassment.

Hill says the lack of a thorough investigation of Ford’s allegation, and the fact that witnesses won’t be allowed to testify, unfairly stacks the proceedings in favor of Kavanaugh. But she says whatever the result of the hearing, the #MeToo movement is much bigger than any one episode.
