California deputy charged in 2017 fatal shooting of woman

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors in central California have charged a deputy with voluntary manslaughter in the 2017 fatal shooting of a Modesto woman.

The Modesto Bee reports the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office filed charges Monday against Stanislaus County Sheriff deputy Justin Wall.

Authorities say Wall shot 46-year-old Elvin Yadegar after a low-speed pursuit that started at a Modesto-are hotel, where deputies had responded to a call about a woman in a fight with a security guard. Shortly after deputies arrived, Yadegar drove away and deputies followed.

Prosecutor say the pursuit ended in neighboring San Joaquin County, where Wall shot Yadegar four times during an attempt to get her out of the car. She died on her way to a hospital.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said Wall was put on administrative leave Monday. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.
