California inmate dies 3 weeks after prison assault

CORCORAN, Calif. (AP) — California officials say an inmate has died weeks after he was attacked by another prisoner.

Corrections officials say 33-year-old James Jackson was pronounced dead at a hospital Friday. He died three weeks after officials said he fell and struck his head during the assault at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran.

Jackson was serving a 21-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter from San Bernardino County.

Another inmate serving a 20-year term for attempted second-degree murder has been identified as the suspect.

The Kings County district attorney’s office is helping in the investigation at the prison, which houses more than 5,400 inmates.
