California man sentenced for shooting, wounding officer
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A California man convicted of shooting and wounding a police officer during a 2016 traffic stop has been sentenced to 41 years to life in prison.
Ruben Carreles was found guilty in May of several charges including attempted murder.
The Fresno Bee reports the 31-year-old was sentenced on Friday.
Prosecutors say Carreles opened the door of a car and started running as Porterville police pulled over a vehicle in which he was a passenger.
Officials say during a foot chase Carreles turned and opened fire, shooting an officer in the buttocks. Carreles was shot by the officer and his partner.
The driver of the car, 33-year-old Vickie Monethichack, pleaded no contest to charges including assault. She was sentenced to more than eight years in prison.
