California woman pleads to hiding granddaughter’s death
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — A California woman has pleaded guilty to helping conceal the death of her 3-year-old granddaughter for over a year.
Maria De Jesus Lopez of Oxnard entered a conspiracy plea Thursday in the 2016 death of Kimberly Lopez. She could face six years in prison.
Authorities say the girl struck her head and died after her mother disciplined her for soiling her diaper.
The Los Angeles Times says prosecutors claimed Lopez gave the girl’s parents $300 and a car to flee to Tijuana, where they buried the girl in a shallow grave but later dug her up, broke up the bones with pliers and tried to dissolve the remains in bleach poured down a sink.
The mother was convicted in December of second-degree murder. The father pleaded guilty to child endangerment.
