Church shooter’s widow says 1st retailer denied him a gun

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The widow of the man suspected of killing more than two dozen worshippers at a South Texas church says one sporting goods retailer refused to sell him the gun before he bought it from another.

Danielle Kelley says in an April 5 affidavit that the manager of Dick’s Sporting Goods in New Braunfels, Texas, refused to sell her husband, Devin Kelley, a Ruger AR 556 assault rifle in December 2015 because he didn’t have a Texas ID.

She says they went to Academy Sports and Outdoors in Selma in April 2016 and bought the rifle, magazine and ammunition in “a quick and easy transaction.” He later returned for additional ammunition.

Authorities say he used the gun during the November 2017 massacre at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs.
