Crossing guard struck by vehicle after saving pedestrian

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a crossing guard was struck by a vehicle after he pushed a pedestrian to safety near a California elementary school.

KABC-TV reports the Simi Valley Police Department says the collision was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday near Madera Elementary School.

Police Sgt. Steve Shorts says the crossing guard suffered “significant” injuries and was transported to a hospital in unknown condition. Shorts says the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. The driver was not impaired.

The age of the pedestrian who was pushed out of the vehicle’s path was unknown, but Shorts confirms the person was not a student.
