Defendant in LA hammer attack ruled insane by judge

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has determined a man charged with beating a woman with a hammer in Los Angeles was insane at the time of the crime.

City News Service reports the judge made the ruling Tuesday after Jae Yang pleaded both no contest and not guilty by reason of insanity in connection with the March 2017 attack.

The 22-year-old Korean national is charged with attempted murder as a hate crime.

Police say the victim was standing in a shopping center in the Koreatown neighborhood when Yang walked up to her and asked if she was Korean.

After she confirmed she was Korean, police say the man walked away. Surveillance video showed the man returned moments later and repeatedly struck the woman in the head with a hammer.

She was seriously injured.
