Deputies unable to revive inmate found unconscious in cell

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says an inmate died after being found unconscious in his cell.

Deputies conducting a security check early Saturday at the George Bailey Detention Facility found the inmate alone and unresponsive in his secure cell.

The agency said deputies performed first aid until relieved by paramedics, but the man died.

The department said in a statement that there was no indication that he had been injured or preliminary evidence suggesting foul play.

His name and age were not immediately released.

The man was in custody for convictions that included assault of a peace officer or firefighter with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer.

The department is investigating the death.
