Dozens of illegal tenants removed from filthy LA building

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities have removed dozens of people who were living illegally in a filthy, former South Los Angeles church.

About 40 people were removed on Friday because authorities said the building had “inhumane” living conditions.

Video showed rooms filled with trash and vermin. Residents said there hadn’t been any lights or running water for months.

KNBC-TV says the building had been converted to transitional housing even though it’s zoned for commercial, not residential use.

The station says residents were paying $300 to $1,000 a month for a bedroom and a shared kitchen and bathroom.

Residents were sent to shelters or given motel vouchers.
