Father missing after trying to rescue daughter in river

NEVADA CITY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Northern California are searching for a father who was swept down a river while trying to rescue his daughter when both were caught in a swift current.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office says the man’s daughter was rescued by state park employees and a good Samaritan but the father continued downstream the South Yuba River.

The office says a California Highway Patrol helicopter and rescue crews searched Saturday, after the man was reported missing, and Sunday but were unable to locate him.

After a very wet winter, the Sierra snowpack is melting and run off has swollen California lakes, rivers and creeks.

Officials urged people to avoid rivers at least until August because they are still very cold and dangerous.
