FBI makes arrests in ATM fraud probe around Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The FBI and local authorities have arrested five people on suspicion of using so-called “shimming” devices to steal bank information at ATMs in Southern California.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller says warrants were served Tuesday in Los Angeles as part of an investigation into bank and credit card fraud across the region.

She says most of the defendants could face charges including aggravated identity theft and conspiracy.

City News Service says at least one suspect remains at large and is being sought by the FBI and Torrance police.

Thieves can use “shimming” devices to read data from bank card chips without the users’ knowledge.
