For-profit college closing operations, surprising students

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — A for-profit college is closing its operations, upsetting some students who were trying to complete their programs.

WLOX-TV reports that students arrived Wednesday at Virginia College in Biloxi, Mississippi, and were told that the college was closed. The campus director told cosmetology students to leave.

Education Corporation of America says on its website that the schools it runs — Brightwood College, Brightwood Career Institute, Ecotech Institute, Golf Academy of America and Virginia College — are being “discontinued” this month. The company has campuses in multiple states. The site says information about transcripts and recommendations about transfers would be available starting about Dec. 17.

The company said in October that the demand for its services had dropped in an improving job market. Court records show the company was having financial problems.
