Globe-trotting political donor eyed in Trump inaugural probe

NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors investigating President Donald Trump’s inaugural committee have asked for records related to a prolific political fundraiser with ties to foreign officials.

Federal prosecutors in New York this week subpoenaed records relating to the committee’s dealings with Imaad Zuberi.

Zuberi is a Los Angeles venture capitalist who raised millions of dollars for Democrats before quickly backing Trump after the 2016 election.

He gave $900,000 to the inaugural committee and another $100,000 to pay down Republican National Convention costs.

Zuberi has denied wrongdoing through a spokesman and says he does not know why his name appeared in the subpoena.

But the inquiry has drawn new attention to Zuberi’s history of political contributions and his work for foreign governments.

He accompanied Qatari officials to Trump Tower shortly before his inaugural committee donation.
