Head of New Orleans police academy to be next chief

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans’ mayor has introduced the head of the city’s police academy as its next police chief.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell said at a livestreamed news conference Monday that Shaun Ferguson’s appointment will allow a prompt transition.

Ferguson says there’s a lot of work needed to improve the department but it has come a long way. He says he’s committed to meeting terms of a consent decree with the federal Justice Department. That agreement was reached in 2012 after decades of scandals involving corruption or questionable use of force.

Superintendent Michael Harrison recently announced his resignation to become police chief in Baltimore. He has held New Orleans’ top police position for more than four years. His last working day in Louisiana will be Friday.
