In Scorsese and Coppola, Marvel meets formidable foes

NEW YORK (AP) — A battle royale has broken out between some of the foremost filmmakers and Marvel Studios.

The brouhaha began when Martin Scorsese suggested Marvel movies aren’t cinema. Francis Ford Coppola doubled down on that sentiment, saying Marvel films are “despicable” for being the same thing over and over again.

Many comic book fans have taken umbrage at those comments. And a handful of Marvel directors, including James Gunn, Joss Whedon and Taika Waititi have defended the studio’s films.

Even the 83-year-old British social realist Ken Loach has joined the fracas. He says Marvel movies are “commodities like hamburgers.”
