Inmate flees Southern California fire camp

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California corrections authorities are searching for an inmate who walked away from a fire camp in the Sylmar area of Los Angeles.

Officials say minimum-security inmate Fernando Deras was determined to be missing from the Holton fire camp during a routine inmate count at 1:25 a.m. Monday.

Local law enforcement and the California Highway Patrol have been notified.

The 31-year-old Deras was serving a four-year sentence for corporal injury.

The camp trains inmates to serve as wildland firefighters.
