Isla Vista community marks 5th anniversary of deadly rampage

ISLA VISTA, Calif. (AP) — The University of California, Santa Barbara, community has solemnly marked the fifth anniversary of the Isla Vista rampage in which six students were slain and 13 other people were wounded.

KEYT-TV reports at least 100 people gathered Thursday on campus at Storke Plaza, where flowers and candles were passed out, and then marched to the Love and Remembrance Garden in Isla Vista.

Names of the victims were read aloud, and the tragic events of May 23, 2014, were recalled.

A mentally ill community college student fatally stabbed three victims in his apartment and then went on a shooting rampage before killing himself.

California subsequently enacted a law allowing family members and police officers to ask judges to temporarily bar individuals who are believed to be dangerous from having guns.
