Job application leads Florida police to suspect in cold case

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A job application that required a Florida man to undergo background check and submit his fingerprints has led to a break in a 1998 slaying case.

News outlets report 51-year-old Todd Barket, of Brandon, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Sondra Better. Better was stabbed and beaten to death at her workplace days before she was set to renew her wedding vows.

Delray Beach police say Barket’s fingerprints in January were matched to evidence police submitted to a national database decades ago. State law enforcement then began monitoring Barket and obtained his DNA. How his DNA was obtained his unclear. Police say his DNA was matched on Tuesday to evidence from the crime scene.

It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
