Kennedy mystique could factor into Massachusetts Senate race

BOSTON (AP) — A decade after the death of Edward Kennedy, another member of the famed political clan is hoping to land a seat in the U.S. Senate.

To get there, U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III will have to persuade Massachusetts voters to oust incumbent Sen. Edward Markey in next year’s Democratic primary.

Kennedy is expected to launch his campaign Saturday in Boston. If successful, he would be the fourth member of the Kennedy family to win a Senate seat.

While his last name is an asset, Kennedy will have to make his case to Democratic primary voters at a time when many are adopting a more liberal agenda.

Markey has tried to embrace that change, including teaming up with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York to push the “Green New Deal” climate change initiative.
