Knife-wielding man wounded by Southern California officer

GARDENA, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives are investigating a shooting by a suburban Gardena police officer that wounded a knife-wielding man.

A Sheriff’s Department statement says Gardena and Los Angeles police officers responded Wednesday to calls of a man at an intersection waving a knife and cutting himself.

A Gardena officer tried to talk the man into dropping the knife but the man refused and told the officer to shoot him. The man lunged at the officer and attempted to stab him. The officer fired and the man fell to the ground but stood up again.

A Los Angeles officer fired a bean bag and another officer used a Taser, which allowed them to take the man into custody.

The man was treated for a gunshot wound to one hand.
