LA deputies shoot passenger in traffic stop altercation
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sheriff’s officials say deputies shot and killed one person and detained another after an altercation during a traffic stop in East Los Angeles.
The car was pulled over late Thursday about 7 miles east of downtown LA.
Officials say some kind of struggle occurred with a man in the passenger seat and deputies opened fire. He was shot and died at a hospital.
Details of what led up to the shooting have not been released. Authorities say a weapon was recovered.
The driver was taken into custody.
Witness Kevin Saenz says he saw what looked like a routine traffic stop. Saenz says he walked around the corner and heard a burst of gunshots.
No deputies were hurt.
Officials didn’t say why deputies pulled the car over.
