Man dies in trench collapse at California construction site

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a worker was killed when a trench collapsed at a construction site in Southern California.

Orange County Fire Authority Captain Larry Kurtz says backhoes were digging in the area when the ground caved in Wednesday afternoon.

Crews used heavy equipment to carefully clear and stabilize the trench and after that teams began removing dirt by hand.

The Orange County Register reports the worker’s body was recovered shortly after 9 p.m. The man’s name was not immediately released.

The Sheriff’s Department and the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health will investigate what caused the trench to cave in at the site in Lake Forest.
