Man pleads no contest in case of 4-year-old who shot mom

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Southern California man has pleaded no contest to a gun charge in the case of a 4-year-old boy who shot and wounded his mother with the man’s shotgun.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office says 24-year-old Brandon Gilbert Ambriz entered the plea Wednesday to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and was sentenced to five years in prison.

Deputy District Attorney Chad Gillette says Ambriz left the shotgun in a vehicle in which children were regularly driven.

On Jan. 23, the 4-year-old shot his mother while she was in the driver’s seat and the boy was in the backseat. The woman was hospitalized with a wound to the torso.

Three other children in the vehicle were not injured.
