Mexican national shot by ICE in Tennessee recovering

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Mexican man shot while fleeing from immigration agents in Tennessee is recovering.

An attorney for his family, Andrew Free, says the man was shot in the stomach and elbow Thursday morning. He did not immediately go to the hospital because he was frightened. Attorneys later negotiated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the man surrendered Thursday afternoon.

The FBI is investigating the case as a potential assault on a federal officer. That’s because the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent said he fired his weapon as the man was driving toward him.

The agencies declined to name the man, who has not been arrested or charged by the FBI.

The attorney says he believes that is because the evidence does not support the ICE agent’s version of events.
