Missing San Diego County hiker found dead

LAKESIDE, Calif. (AP) — A man who went missing during a weekend hike on San Diego County’s El Cajon Mountain has been found dead.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says the body of 50-year-old Thomas Mark Castiglia was found near the base of a sheer cliff.

Castiglia joined a group to hike the mountain Saturday and at late morning told others he would be hiking at a slower pace and advised the group to not wait for him.

He was reported missing when he did not return to the trailhead shortly before 3 p.m.

Searchers worked through the night before finding his body.

Castiglia was described as an experienced hiker with no known medical conditions.

The Sheriff’s Department says the medical examiner’s office has taken over the investigation.
