Mother of 5 held in $1M drug smuggling scheme

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say a woman stopped at Mexico’s border with San Diego had her five children in a minivan stuffed with about $1 million worth of illegal drugs.

KNSD-TV reports that the 34-year-old woman was stopped just after midnight Monday at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

Authorities say a scanner found unusual images in the doors, side panels, gas tank and spare tire well of the Honda Odyssey.

A search discovered more than 200 packages containing 231 pounds of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin.

The woman was arrested and her children turned over to a family member.
