News industry leaders fighting back against claims by Trump

NEW YORK (AP) — With President Trump and his supporters saying journalists were “so wrong for so long” in their coverage of the Russian investigation, news industry leaders are fighting back.

The latest to weigh in is Steve Coll, dean of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He wrote in The New Yorker magazine this week that it’s wrong to conclude journalism failed just because special counsel Robert Mueller did not charge Trump with conspiring with Russians to influence the 2016 election.

Columbia awarded the Pulitzer Prize to The New York Times and The Washington Post for their Russia coverage, a prize Trump says should be taken away.

Complicating the discussion is the broad definition of “news media” circa 2019.
