Newsom a target in last California governor debate

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The candidates for California governor sparred over issues from immigration and taxes to infidelity in the last major debate of the race before the June primary.

Tuesday’s debate in San Jose got intensely personal at times as Democratic front-runner Gavin Newsom took fire from his rivals in both parties.

Newsom has a firm lead in the polls, and five other major candidates are seeking the second of two slots in the November general election.

They appeared together for likely the last time in the debate televised statewide.

The most tense moment came when Republican Assemblyman Travis Allen referenced Newsom’s affair with the wife of a friend while he was mayor of San Francisco. Allen asked whether Newsom could be trusted to lead California.
